My Day with Grandma Ruby

{I wrote this on Thursday, March 6}

Since my lovely Grandma Ruby is on Hospice care, someone has to stay with her 24/7. I know that {most} of the family agrees that we do not want a sitter here, but would rather us rotate days to stay with her instead.

Today I volunteered to help! And it's been a super day so far!

I had it all planned out last night what we would eat:

I'd cook bacon and eggs for breakfast (although Grandma Ruby doesn't eat eggs that often...they make her feet swell) so we just did bacon and toast. I seriously burned the first batch of bacon! Like, ummmm, thank you lord for letting the microwave not catch on fire!!! The second batch was cooked on the stove, and even then, my mom had to tell me "Bran, the bacon is burning!" Because I was talking to Grandma Ruby!! Oops!!

Lunch we had leftover meatloaf and peas/carrots from my house. She loved it and ate a big (for her) helping! Yaaaay!

For dinner I've got a pot of beans going! When we were little, about once a week, Grandma Ruby would make a pot of beans. She would declare, "Girls, I've got a pot of beans on", to which we would get sooo excited. 1) Because Grandma Ruby makes the most out of this world-delicious beans! 2) It made the whole house smell heavenly! 3) To us, this was the comfort food of all comfort foods! So I had to pass it on...or as The Bobby Bones Show would say, we are #pimpinjoy!!!!

I'm so honored to get to be her caretaker for one day! This woman has taught me so much and sill continues to do so! She is the most selfless person I know. As my mom says, she'd give you her last dollar. And in many situations, I'm sure she did give us her last dollar. I love her so much!

Today I soaked in a ton:

-Quality time spent is far more important than any actual material object in this world.

-Don't, for any reason, be the source of drama during a hard family situation. Just don't.

-According to Grandma Ruby, cornbread served with butter and jelly is a dessert in the Deep South! Yummy!

-Back in the day, like waaaaay back in the day, before electric or even manual breast pumps, women would take a sterilized jar, put some paper or cotton balls in it, light them on fire, then let the fire smother out and quickly put it over their breast. This would rapidly pull and relieve the woman of engorgement, even expressing milk! Who knew!

-My grandmother moved into her white stucco house with red trim on November 2, 1979! The North Room was an add on in the mid-eighties for Uncle Joe and his medical staff.

-Grandma Ruby religiously watches "The Young and the Restless" :)

It was a spectacular day filled with great conversations and lots of napping! The icing on the cake? Getting to visit with my cousin who I haven't talked to in probably 8-10 years (and haven't seen her in at least 13!). We chatted on the phone and have been texting pictures of our families to catch up for lost time!

I'm excited for another day with Grandma, but for now I'm enjoying the day home with Jojo, Charbear and Liza Bear!

xoxo
